CONFUSED COUTURE

CONFUSION REIGNED supreme at Varun Bahl's couture showing on the fifth day of the HDIL sponsored India Couture Week in Mumbai.

At times, the designer chose to give his garments and Edwardian silhouette (slim fitted with bustles and lots of cowl detailing at the back), and at times, he went a tad Victorian with voluminous skirts, making for a mish-mash of styles from different eras.

What we did like was Varun's extensive use of velvet and velvet embroidery but on closer inspection through the opera glasses each guest was given at the show - through which one was supposed to better view the collection - his finishing lacked the finesse that haute couture traditionally commands.

The entire collection of sarees, lehengas, long dresses and long jackets were accessorised with feather headgear which immediately had us wondering if British miliner, Philip Treacy, had designed them for this showing. Unfortunately he didn't, which is why what Varun showed looked like watered-down versions of Treacy's extravagant creations, and had us wishing we were seated in the front row of London Fashion Week instead.

Our verdict: Yawn.....!!!!
